Case Study: A Beautifully Crafted Family History Book – From Concept to Creation

In the early part of 2023, I was contacted by a client about creating a book for her dad. We collaborated on the project over the course of three months, and in July the book was accepted into the Saints at War collection at BYU Special Collections. It was a proud moment for me to have our book shared in the library! In this case study, I’ll share the process of book creation, step by step.

Step 1: Gathering Artifacts and Photos:
My client sent me the three-ring binder memory book and I carefully digitized black and white photographs and a few telegraph messages on a large flatbed scanner. Each photo received a unique index number, captions, and descriptive notes, ensuring that every detail was preserved for generations to come.

Step 2: Photo Restoration and Enhancement:
To breathe new life into the vintage photographs, we embarked on a journey of digital restoration. Faces were enhanced, lines and wrinkles smoothed, and colors revitalized. The images began to tell a vivid story of Stanley’s early life and Korean War experiences.

Step 3: Transcribing and Crafting the Narrative:
The heart of the project lay in the audio interviews where Stanley recounted his experiences to his daughter. I meticulously transcribed these interviews, transforming them into a compelling written narrative that would captivate readers.

Step 4: Crafting the Layout and Design:
With all the photographs planned, and the narrative written, I took to PowerPoint to do the final designs. It’s very user-friendly. We decided to make the book a trade-size 6 x 9 book, similar to one you’d see displayed at bookstore. This would allow us to make the photographs large enough to see in the book.

Step 5: Adding Genealogy Insights:
To provide context and a deeper understanding of Stanley’s early life, we conducted light genealogy research to verify some details. We discovered a yearbook photograph on Ancestry, and family images on FamilySearch, enriching the narrative.

Step 6: Collaboration and Proofreading:
Client collaboration was key as we ordered a proof copy of the book for their analysis and critique. Together, we refined the details and proofread. We gathered insights from other children of the family as well just to make sure we didn’t miss anything!

Step 7: Bringing the Book to Life:
With the final details in place, we moved forward with the printing process. The family history book was meticulously brought to life, with a striking dust jacket and a linen wrap hardcover adorned with gold-embossed lettering on the spine.

Step 8: The Gift of a Lifetime:
The moment had arrived. Stanley, at 93 years young, received this meaningful memento on Father’s Day. It wasn’t just a book; it was a legacy, a testament to his extraordinary life and the love of his family. Even friends and neighbors have requested copies of his book to keep.

Do you have stories that need to be told? Let’s chat! I would love to help you with your book project.
